There always seems to be an arguement about paint not being as durable on boats as gel coat. Wrong! This statement can be correct though if the person applying the paint is not knowledgeable with paint products, prep proceedures or just simply doesn't have the experience. When done properly paint is superior to gel. It is more durable and flexible. Through time, gel coat yellows, fades or discolors. Paint doesn't. Some of the boats that I have painted exceed 160 mph and I have never had one delaminate. I apply 8 coats of a high solids clearcoat. This protects the art/paintwork from most damage. The only time I have ever had to repair one of my boat paint jobs was when a customer hit a metal bouy. The only damage was a scratch about 3" long, which I was able to repair in less than 3 hours.
By adding flex agents, the paint will not stress crack like gel coat and any scratches that might happen to the clear coat are much easier to repair by just buffing than it is to get them out of gel. If you're thinking about getting your boat custom painted, be cautious on who you use. If you try to save a buck by having some fly-by-night painter who works out of his garage or one that paints cars for a living and thought they'd jump on the band wagon in customizing boats, you might end up with a real problem on your hands when the paint falls off. Then you'll have to pay someone like me to fix it. With that said, Paint simply kicks gel coats ass. We can do more with paint like illustrations, candies, pearls, colorshifting and special effects. I can honestly say, My paint jobs will probably outlast the boat itself.
